Le Point Sublime: panoramic viewpoint over the Gorges du Tarn

A panorama that lives up to its name! Located near the village of Saint-Georges-de-Lévéjac, on the heights of the Causse de Sauveterre, Point Sublime offers one of the finest views of the Gorges du Tarn on the Lozère side.

A must-see on the Lozère side of the Gorges du Tarn

Of the many lookouts along the Gorges du Tarn route, the “Point Sublime”, as its name suggests, is the most grandiose. On the edge of the cornices, this rocky promontory rises to an altitude of 870 metres. It overlooks the most spectacular part of the canyon. It’s one of the only free, secure panoramas in the Gorges du Tarn. Accessible by car, this Lozère tourist mecca attracts between 80,000 and 100,000 visitors every year.

From the top of this cliff, the view is impressive, plunging down into the gorges and meanders of the Tarn. In a single glance, you can see the Détroits gorge , the Cirque des Baumes and the Pas du Soucy, the three great wonders of the Tarn Cañon. The flight of vultures overhead makes the moment even more magical.

Les Détroits: on the left, the narrowest and deepest part of the Gorges du Tarn, where the lauze roofs of the hamlet of La Croze become one with the cliff. Pas de Soucy: on the right, a rocky chaos between the villages of La Malène and Les Vignes, where the Tarn disappears beneath huge collapsed boulders. Le Cirque des Baumes: below the Point Sublime, the Tarn makes a right-angle bend, allowing you to admire the gorges in succession.

A site designed to welcome visitors

Point Sublime has been converted to welcome visitors. The Maison du Tourisme du Point Sublime, open from April to September, offers souvenirs of local produce and arts and crafts. A snack bar offers wood-fired grills, salads, sandwiches and homemade ice creams while enjoying the view.

Access and directions: how to reach Point Sublime?

Open all year round, the site is easily accessible by car:

• From Les Vignes or La Malène on the D46.
• From Causse de Sauveterre via Saint-Georges-de-Lévéjac.
• You can also arrive from La Canourgue, Le Massegros or Chanac.
  

Pay parking – free for the first 15 minutes – is available on site. From here, it’s a 600 m walk along a well-maintained path to the viewpoint.

The more athletic will climb directly from the river to Baumes Basses or Hilaire.

Accommodation: where to stay to explore the Gorges du Tarn?

For a comfortable stay in the Gorges du Tarn, Camping Les Calquières is an ideal base for visiting Point Sublime. From the campsite, follow signs for “Le Massegros – Gorges du Tarn” (D995). At Le Massegros, follow signs for Point Sublime (D32 and D46).
